Usually (unless White has strong nearby stones on the outside) trying
to live without ko is bad here because White can hope only for a very
heavy group. The ko, if White wins it by capturing an outside stone,
gives White good shape.
Needless to say, in almost all cases it was Black's mistake to leave a
hole in the corner.
