Games & licensing periods

Hi,
_at_work we?ve got a database tool which has a pretty nifty way of
licensing.
1) Everyone can download and install the tool ? this gives you the
shareware version
2) You can buy a license key for 1 year or a permanent one for about
double the money ? you get send a file which you copy into the tool?s
directory and you?re good to go ? no server activation required
In essence this is pretty much a serial number with an expiration
date. The thing is that this makes the tool cheaper for those who
don?t intend on using it year in year out, and more expensive for the
heavy users. Would such an approach also work with pc wargames ? I
think it would, given how many complaints I see about the heavy
initial outlay for some games. It?s also better than a demo because
you?ve got the entire game to play with, and not just a slice of it
and it also saves the developers the time required to create a
separate demo.
$1.99 gives you 72 hours to play the game
$19.99 gives you a year license
$49.99 gives you a permanent license
Throw in some ?upgrade license? stuff and you?re set
