Audiobooks question

I don't generally listen to Audiobooks, so I didn't notice this until
someone else showed me.
When I open iTunes, I can go to books, and see 3 audiobooks. On my
iPod app on my iPad, I see those same 3 audiobooks. When I look at
them in Finder on my Mac, I see that they are .m4a or .m4b files.
But when I go to music, I see some more audiobooks which are stored as
..mp3 books. iTunes has them with genre = audiobooks. Do I need
to find some way to convert them to .m4a to have them treated as
audiobooks? If so, what do you recommend?
