Virgin router + ADSL modem connection?

Yesterday I was trying to resolve an issue on a mates new Acer
All_in_one PC. It was one like this:
http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/model/PW.SEUE2.084
He was having issues with it randomly seeing his (VirginMedia branded
Netgear cable-) router but was ok with a neighbours Netgear..
As an exercise (and an opportunity for me <g>) I booted both Mint 10
and U11.10 LiveCds to see if it was a OS / Driver or 'other issue'.
Mint 10 didn't see the Realtek WiFi but Ubuntu did and like W7 could
only 'see' their neighbours router.
My Mint 10 / XP netbook could see and connect to both routers straight
off.
Once I'd figured out the admin access to their router I changed the
Channel selection from 'Auto' to a free channel and the speed down
from 300Mbps to 145 and everything seemed to work fine.
I specifically meant to try Unity but because we were keen to sort the
connection out it wasn't the right 'time'.
I also tried Mint on their old PC but that was connected to the
Internet via a USB 'Dial-up' ADSL modem and I wasn't sure what was
needed to make that work. I suggested that had they not been going
over to cable I would have stuck a cheap modem/router in there but I
am still interested to know if you can typically use these modems with
Linux?
Cheers, T i m
p.s. They were talking of giving the old PC to their grandson so I
offered to stick Linux on there (probably dual boot) because of some
of the good Edutainment stuff you can get.
