Unity vs NVidia
I have always found NVidia to be the most Linux friendly cards until
Unity. I am not thrilled with the interface, but I want to test it out
and give it a fair evaluation before it is foisted on me next year for
all the library computers that I manage.
I could not get 11.04 ever to run on my laptop, either by upgrade or
fresh install so I have stayed with 10.10. I test 11.10 and found it
will at least run Unity but only 2D, where in 10.10 it is running fully
tricked-out Compiz with Emerald with no trouble at all!
Firstly it seems that it does not use the NVidia driver, nothing in
"Additional Drivers". I enabled the restricted sources, added the PPA
and tried to install the nvidia-current and I get the dang
initramfs-tools install error and then left with a none working X.
Testing with unity_support_test shows that the laptop's Go 7300 is
blacklisted. It is an older card, but as I said before pre-Unity 3d was
no issue. But my desktop's new 450 GTS is not supported either?
Not software rendered: no
GLX texture from pixmap: no
What gives? What is the procedure to get a NVidia card to run Unity?
Whatever I have found fails...

Take care,
Jonathan
