Synapitc problem in Mint Debian

Hello I just installed Debian Mint to try and had a rough time
updating (968MB) as I had to repair broken packages several times.
Any way as soon as I got the system up to date I went to install some
software from Synaptic. I got an error message that the session was
disrupted and to manually run 'dpkg--configure-a'
When I tried to run the command I got an error message:
dpkg--configure-a: command not found
With no way to get software the system is useless to me.
Do I have to nuke the hard drive and start over?
BTW the MD5 checksum was good for the ISO.....
