For that old school look 'n' feel

They all need a point of difference in a crowded market place. Personally
I prefer KDE although I'm using Gnome 3 at the moment.

For what it's worth, Gnome 3, MATE, and Cinnamon and are eminently
untweakable at the moment because they are 'works in progress'. By
komparison KDE is a ktweakers paradise.

that may point you along the path you want to follow, however be aware of
the caveats.
