My new dongle: a follow up

It's a bit coy of saying the maker's name, just "Made in China" (aren't
they all?) The device is called a Wireless USB Adapter (X00015RY2T), and
is compatible with Linux, among others.
The instructions are in such small print as to be unreadable, but at the
top it says: "IMPORTANT: For proper operation, do not connect the
Wireless-LAN USB Adapter to your computer before you install the
software." So I tried to do that. But although there was a mini disc with
software on it, I couldn't get it to install. So, to cut a long boring
story short, I put the dongle in a USB slot on another computer, also
running Linux, of course, and, bless me, it just worked without any
software being installed.
So I put it on my main desktop where it also just worked.
I have a friend who calls Instructions "Destructions". Now I see why.
Thanks to you all for your help and advice. Just thought you might like
to hear how I got on.
