Mint 10 bottom panel currupt?

Hi all,
I just took a call from an old boy whose computer I seem to have
become responsible for saying 'he couldn't get on the internet'.
The PC initially had just XP but when I went round there last to sort
out a little problem I took the opportunity of showing then installing
Mint for him. He's been happy with it for a couple of weeks saying
'it's fast' etc.
Talking him though it it seems the or some of the panel is missing ...
I think he's saying the panel and the menu button are there but
nothing else, no calendar, no volume no network etc?
It could well be the same issue as reported here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=74946
Now I think I have seen similar "The Panel encountered a problem while
loading <whatever>, Do you want to delete the applet from your
configuration?" and I generally answer 'No' but he may well have done
different (he can't remember).
Would the panel not loading properly prohibit it from connecting to
the Internet as he also mentioned the 'Not connected' type popup
message but the box is still fine (and connecting) under XP.
I might be able to do some remote maintenance using Teamviewer if I
could get him online again.
If I was to get him to start terminal and enter:
killall -1 gnome-panel
.... should that do it, put the missing things back, even if he's said
'Yes' to deleting them permanently (for now at least)?
Or what would he need to do to put the networking applet back on at
least (or ensure the wired network was running so I could get in
remotely).
Or should I just try and get back there and install Mint 10? ;-(
Cheers, T i m
